My good friend, Szifra Birke, has written a powerful book that she is literally *giving away.* It’s about how ten people who grew up with alcoholism in the family—and most important how they change their lives.

While I personally did NOT grow up in an alcoholic family – in my 8 years of working with people, I bump into people every day who have every reason to be happy, but they’re not. At work, they feel like frauds waiting to be found out, as parents they want to be better and don’t know how. Their relationships with spouses or even employees aren’t what they want them to be. They just want to be content but can’t find peace of mind.

When I first met Szifra, I knew she had something to share. Szifra has figured out how to do what most people only dream about doing– move past a really tough childhood and have a happy, content life with lots of friends, loving family, work that is satisfying and have a great time, too.

Why would she just give away her book? It turns out there are three excellent reasons.

First, there used to be lots of attention in the media that helped people from high-stress and alcoholic families know they were not alone. She’s on a mission to get the word out again because as she says, “no one has to feel alone, ashamed or isolated. We all have insecurities, fears, self-doubts—and can learn to be more confident, comfortable and be better parents. Recovery and results are in reach—we just need to give people the tools.”

extends beyond the grave, through the boundless realms of eternity.”

545 PEOPLE

Politicians are the only people in the world who create problems and then campaign against them.  Have you ever wondered, if both the Democrats and the Republicans are against  deficits, WHY do we have deficits?

Have you ever wondered, if all the politicians are against inflation and high taxes, WHY do we have inflation and high taxes?

You and I don’t propose a federal budget.  The President does.
You and I don’t have the Constitutional authority to vote on appropriations. The House of Representatives does.
You and I don’t write the tax code, Congress does.
You and I don’t set fiscal policy, Congress does.
You and I don’t control monetary policy, the Federal Reserve Bank does.

One hundred Senators, 435 Congressmen, one President, and nine Supreme Court justices , 545 human beings out of the 300 million are directly, legally, morally, and individually responsible for the domestic problems that plague this country.

I excluded the members of the Federal Reserve Board because that problem was created by the Congress.   In 1913, Congress delegated its Constitutional duty to provide a sound currency to a federally chartered, but private, central bank.

I excluded all the special interests and lobbyists for a sound reason. They have no legal authority.   They have no ability to coerce a senator, a congressman, or a president to do one cotton-picking thing.  I don’t care if they offer a politician $1 million dollars in cash. The politician has the power to accept or reject it. No matter what the lobbyist promises, it is the legislator’s responsibility to determine how he votes.

Those 545 human beings spend much of their energy convincing you that what they did is not their fault.   They cooperate in this common con regardless of party.  What separates a politician from a normal human being is an excessive amount of gall.   No normal human being would have the gall of a Speaker, who stood up and criticized the President for creating deficits…   The president can only propose a budget.   He cannot force the Congress to accept it.

The Constitution, which is the supreme law of the land, gives sole responsibility to the House of Representatives for originating and approving appropriations and taxes.

Who is the speaker of the House?   Nancy Pelosi.  She is the leader of the majority party.   She and fellow House members, not the President, can approve any budget they want. If the president vetoes it, they can pass it over his veto if they agree to.

It seems inconceivable to me that a nation of 300 million can not replace 545 people who stand convicted — by present facts — of incompetence and irresponsibility.   I can’t think of a single domestic problem that is not traceable directly to those 545 people.  When you fully grasp the plain truth that 545 people exercise the power of the federal government, then it must follow that what exists is what they want to exist.

If the tax code is unfair, it’s because they want it unfair.

If the budget is in the red, it’s because they want it in the red ..

If the Army & Marines are in  IRAQ , it’s because they want them in IRAQ .

If they do not receive social security but are on an elite retirement plan not available to the people, it’s because they want it that way.

There are no insoluble government problems.

Do not let these 545 people shift the blame to bureaucrats, whom they hire and whose jobs they can abolish; to lobbyists, whose gifts and advice they can reject; to regulators, to whom they give the power to regulate and from whom they can take this power.   Above all, do not let them con you into the belief that there exists disembodied mystical forces like “the economy,” “inflation,” or “politics” that prevent them from doing what they take an oath to do.

Those 545 people, and they alone, are responsible.

They, and they alone, have the power.

They, and they alone, should be held accountable by the people who are their bosses.

Provided the voters have the gumption to manage their own employees.  We should vote all of them out of office and clean up their mess!

5. Say I Love You

Right now you may be thinking, “I’ve got so much to be sorry about these days. I’m sorry about the economy, my stock portfolio, my job, etc, I don’t want to say I’m sorry to ANYONE!!!”

Others may be saying, “I’m forgiving everything these days, debts, accounts  receivable, I don’t want to forgive anyone else!!!”

It’s during these down times that we realize just how fleeting temporal “stuff” is and how important and valuable a kind word from someone can be.

Won’t you decide to make yourself and someone else feel a little better, a little lighter today?  Let them know they matter to you, that they matter enough for you to be respectful and polite. Then ask them to pass it on.

Maybe you’re thinking, “but I’m scared Doug!”

Well friend, you’re not alone! And yet one of the most understood things about fear, as is the case with most things, is that there are two sides to every situation! Fear serves you as a natural protection measure, and at the same time, fear can make you a prisoner if you let it.

Working with clients (and myself too!) there comes a point when you just have to decide that today is the day I choose to control how I respond to life and therefore create my own experience of it and ignore the external influences.

Remember that emotions like fear, anger and frustration,  are  your subconscious minds way of yelling at you and saying “Hey!!! Pay attention!!!!”

And instead of doing something about it, too many people give into the fear, turn inside and try to ignore the external world! You’ve seen them, maybe in the mirror!

So what can you do about it?

Remember, you get to choose what you focus on. Will you choose to focus on what you can control, or things you have no control over? Will you focus on the past and what you don’t have or choose to decide what you want and focus on that?

I suggest the first thing you do is to simply take charge of what you allow into your mind! Remember that as you think so you become! You will become what you put into your mind and what you allow others to put there…shut off the news…cancel the paper…whatever it takes.

The next thing to do is to get MOVING!!! Changing your physical state will do wonders for you! My good friend Harold “Bubba” Malloy has been instrumental at helping me and many others understand how important it is to move the body and how the mind and body are connected together. Change one, you’ll change the other!

Others have been there too, you don’t have to go it alone.

In a nut shell

1.       Decide right now. ” I’ve had enough!”

2.      Decide what you want – and – change what you’re doing!

3.      Take Charge! Utilize the circumstances of your life instead of tolerating them!

4.      Find a proven plan to get you where you want to go and..

5.       Get Moving! Take action until you succeed!

PS: In case you’re wondering, I do believe that if you borrowed the money and agreed to re pay it, you need to take responsibility and honor your commitment. I also believe that the LENDERS should be  held responsibile to cross all their T’s and dot all their i’s and if they sold a crappy product, then they should be held to a HIGHER standard. It’s only “fair”, right?

In addition to discussing avoiding substance abuse and dealing with sexuality, we also spent a lot of time discussing personal and family finances, family crisis and how technology affects us.

Some of the things that came up that I want to remind you to complete or review are:

1. Family Spending Plan (Budget)

2. Minimum 6 month CASH cushion

3. Estate Plan (Wills, Trusts, Insurance, etc)

4. Fire / Emergency Plan

5. Emergency Food / Water / Clothes / Supplies

6. Succession Plan – especially if you’ve got multiple properties, businesses, entities and children!

7. The need to have your key trusted advisors in the loop, and that they and your family know what you want done if you’re not there.

If you haven’t got this done or if you have and haven’t reviewed it for sometime, do yourself and your loved ones a favor. Get ‘er done!
